Hey there! Welcome to my corner of the world! My name is Rebekah De Couvreur. I am a Registered Dietitian living and working in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. I help athletes of all ages and abilities reach optimize their nutrition to unleash their full potential in their sport and in life. I educate and guide athletes with an Intuitive Eating lense, meaning I do not prescribe diets, restrictive eating habits, meal plans or focus on body weight in our work together. I strive to make easy and enjoyable nutrition strategies that improve your strength, health, and performance.
Okay, okay enough of my elevator pitch. I want to share a few of my favourite snacks that provide beneficial nutrients while satisfying that craving for something sweet. However, let me be clear - you can and should enjoy the real sweets (chocolate, ice cream, cakes, you name it!) sometimes too! Those foods do provide energizing carbs, fat and lots of enjoyment. So enjoy them! But we know that there are other options that are more satiating, provide more benefits for sport fueling and recovery, and offer higher contents of micronutrients for your body. For this reason, it is nice to have a repertoire of nourishing snacks that you love to include.
Here are my top 5:
Apple Nachos - cut up an apple and top it with your choice of nut butter, granola, nuts and seeds, chocolate chips, or any other combos you'd like. This snack is rich in fiber, vitamin C, protein and healthy fats.
Trail mix - no need to get all fancy here - purchase a pre-made mix or make your own with your favourite dried fruits, nuts, seeds, and, my favourite addition, some dark chocolate!

Energy bites - A bite-size snack that packs carbs, protein, fiber and healthy fats into a delicious bundle. There are so many varieties you can make, a quick google search is sure to find you a winner but here is one of my favourites! https://www.simplyrecipes.com/five-ingredient-energy-balls-recipe-8764534
Chocolate zucchini bread - basically enjoy a slice of moist chocolate cake but pack it full of fiber and vitamin C from the zucchini. This recipe from Love and Lemons using some whole wheat flour for added fiber, uses oil for the fat and maple syrup for the sweetener.

And there you have it! My 5 favourite snacks for satisfying my sweet tooth that also offer some additional nutritional benefits.
